Environmental, Health and Safety Manager

Job Description
This position will work independently to lead, manage, and facilitate environmental, safety, and health programs and policies relating to applicable Costa Rica regulations.  Primary responsibilities include planning, developing, implementing and administering safety, environmental, and health programs to ensure the health and safety of ALL associates in MV Costa Rica, and to ensure a high state of regulatory compliance. Interfacing with associates and management regarding EHS initiatives is also imperative in this position to drive to a zero-accident profile, and to drive continuous improvement activities within the organization.  Job duties:
  • Establish EH&S strategies and programs to ensure a safe work environment by promoting a positive safety culture engaging all associates to be compliant with local authorities, country, and local regulations.
  • Provide leadership to the Safety Committees/Teams to foster involvement, set annual goals, and drive accountability. 
  • Actively partner with management to establish policies and direction (e.g. establish and achieve EHS goals/metrics) that successfully lead the EHS program.
  • Champion safety activities and be a resource to safety representatives and management.
  • Provide a comprehensive quarterly EHS update to management.
  • Analyze EHS performance identifying, recommending, and driving improvements.
  • Stay on top of new and changing EHS standards. Proactively identify, prioritize, and manage EHS risks for the business, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ensure a robust safety audit process is in place for all facilities to pinpoint unsafe working conditions, behaviors and practices, and develop sound recommendations for corrections.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and administration of all EHS training and ensure all are carried out according to company policy.
  • Train and coach Management regarding effective loss prevention techniques utilizing multidisciplinary strategies - incident investigation, hazard identification, self-inspection and associate training.
  • Develop and recommend incident/accident prevention programs to include specific protective procedures and devices, ensuring effective investigations with root cause analysis.  Drive associated documentation and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Responsible for EHS program assessments including ergonomics, PPE and machine guarding.
  • Coordinate with all departments (e.g. Manufacturing, Engineering) on the design and construction of new equipment, facilities and processes to ensure safe design.
  • Use professional safety tools/knowledge such as ergonomics, management skills, industrial hygiene, presentation skills, etc. to convey and improve safety.
  • Lead EHS continuous improvement projects.
  • Responsible for environmental programs: waste streams including solid (e.g. biological / hazardous), liquid and airborne emissions.
  • Compliance with Water / Storm Water / Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety programs.
  • Oversight of emergency response procedures and training, and security of hazardous waste materials.
  • Coordinate investigations and activities associated with pollution remediation.
  • Manage, or when managed by another department, support recordkeeping requirements associated with EHS programs.
  • Maintain an effective relationship with EHS related agencies (e.g. emergency management services).
  • Understand and work within the quality systems, following FDA and applicable international regulations as required.
  • Develop and manage budget for area of responsibility.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
  2. A minimum of seven (7) years of related EHS experience in managing, directing, and planning in a complex and/or regulated manufacturing environment.
  3. Requires exceptional demonstrated expertise in planning, budgeting, and project management directed toward achievement of business goals.
  4. Previous experience in ISO 14001 environment or implementing a ISO 14001 program.
  5. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills.
  6. Must be able to pass background check for access to strategic/sensitive materials.
Desired Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated ability to lead function using a management system approach, conduct and support EHS audits and providing training necessary to maintain regulatory compliance.
  2. Thorough knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, FDA, NFPA, and other related compliance requirements.
  3. Demonstrated ability to influence and the ability to work with all levels of the organization.
  4. Demonstrated ability to lead multiple complex projects while successfully meeting budgets and schedules.
  5. Proven leadership and managerial skills demonstrated by developing, training, and coaching teams in an organizational setting.
